DEEP FLIGHT PRODUCTIONS is pleased to announce the limited Off-Broadway engagement of Lanford Wilson’s THE MOONSHOT TAPE and A POSTER OF THE COSMOS, directed by Mark Cirnigliaro and starring Margaret Curry* and Geoff Stoner. A pair of one-act plays about taking control of destiny and retaliating against fate, THE MOONSHOT TAPE & A POSTER OF THE COSMOS will play a one-week limited engagement at Off-Broadway’s The Siggy at the Flea (20 Thomas Street, New York, NY, 10007). Performances begin Wednesday, February 21, and continue through Sunday, February 25. THE MOONSHOT TAPE and A POSTER OF THE COSMOS unite in a compelling evening of one-act plays by the celebrated American playwright Lanford Wilson. In these monologues, Wilson intricately explores themes of love, human sexuality, and the profound impact our surroundings and relationships have on shaping our identities. The plays are a poetic and cataclysmic journey, unraveling inward, chaotic, and exhilarating truths that resonate on deeply personal and universally relevant levels. 

PLEASE NOTE CONTENT ADVISORY: both plays encompass mature and intense themes such as graphic language, sexual violence, illness, and death. Viewer discretion is advised, and individuals are encouraged to consider their comfort levels and preferences before attending.

In THE MOONSHOT TAPE, Diane, a successful writer, returns to her hometown to assist her aging mother. Diane responds to questions from an unseen interviewer, whose presence is only hinted at by a persistent tape recorder. The play weaves a poignant tale of self-discovery, revealing the complexities of Diane's life, marked by loss, emotional turmoil, and the indelible impact of her upbringing.

A POSTER OF THE COSMOS introduces us to a man delivering a statement during a police interrogation for an unknown crime. The story delves into the intricacies of the human experience, exploring the depth of emotions, relationships, and the challenges faced by individuals. As his memories unfold, the play becomes a powerful exploration of love and commitment in the face of adversity.

While distinct in their narratives, both plays share Wilson's signature style of storytelling that captures the complexity of human relationships and the profound impact of personal history. Through poetic language and compelling monologues, Wilson invites the audience to witness the inward struggles and exhilarating truths that define the characters' lives. These plays validate the enduring relevance and universality of Lanford Wilson's exploration of the human condition.

BIOGRAPHIES

MARK CIRNIGLIARO (Director) – NY world premieres: The Net Will Appear by Erin Mallon starring Richard Masur (59E59), The Hounds of War by Bill Holland (Abingdon Theatre), The Little Princess by Jennifer Bowen (June Havoc Theatre), The Judgment of Fools by Bernardo Cubria (INTAR Theatre). Comfort Women: A New Musical by Dimo Kim (Peter Jay Sharp Theater – Associate Director). He directed the award winning production of Honour: Confessions of a Mumbai Courtesan, by Dipti Mehta and recently took JJ Pyles’ How to Find A Husband in 37 Years (or longer) for a successful run at Edinburgh Fringe. Mark directed the first academic productions of Annie Baker's The Aliens and Rajiv Joseph's Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo. He was formerly the associate artistic director of Mile Square Theatre, resident director of InViolet Theatre, and co-founder of Wee Man Productions. Mark currently works with Jersey City Theater Center as part of their new play development, and is on faculty at The Peddie School. He graduated from Rutgers University's Mason Gross School of the Arts with his MFA in Directing, earning the Dean John I Bettenbender Award for Artistic Excellence.

MARGARET CURRY* (Diane) is a Houston, Texas native who has built a solid reputation as an award-winning actress, producer, director, and singer. Curry has extensive training and experience on stage, including over 300 performances as Titania in the Off-Broadway hit Fools in Love, The Musical, and two Equity National tours playing Karin in the musical Church Basement Ladies. On screen, she gained attention starring as the uptight, deep-in-grief Lily in the heartfelt feature film Starfish, and shined as the cutthroat, out-for-justice Attorney Andrews in the action feature film, Diamond Ruff, directed by Alec Asten and produced by Young! Studios. Most recently, Curry delivers a dose of comical skepticism as the pesky family friend, Susan Baker, in the new holiday feature film, MERRY GOOD ENOUGH, written by Caroline Keene, who co-directs with director of photography Dan Kennedy, now available on all major streaming platforms (Apple/Amazon/Dish.) She's appeared in national and regional commercials, including Carnival Cruises, Spike TV, Jello Mousse, and Cuisinart. Favorite directing credits include directing, co-writing, and -producing the one-woman short play “An Evening with Eva: Waiting for Adolf”, starring Maxine Muster, as well as directing the US premiere of Brian Eley’s "Some Things Are Just Too Big for Numbers" starring actress Nina Lainville. Up next, Curry is co-writing, co-starring, and co-producing an original web series with her producing partners Byrje Adams and Lindy Rogers. As a singer, Curry has shared the stage with such luminaries as Leslie Uggams, Carol Channing, Billy Stritch, Amanda Green, and Ann Hampton Callaway. She has appeared as a soloist or featured performer at the Kaplan Auditorium at Lincoln Center, the Allen Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Hudson Guild Theatre, and many of NYC's hottest nightclubs and cabaret venues. Margaret's solo show “The Space In-Between” which debuted at The Laurie Beechman Theatre on November 30, 2023, returns for encore performances on April 6th and May 4th, 2024.

GEOFF STONER (Tom) is an actor, cabaret performer, and director. As an actor, Stoner appeared as the title character in a theatrical adaptation of Lois Lowry's novel The Giver, directed by Wynn Handman and performed in New York City schools as part of the American Place Theatre's “Literature To Life” series. Other New York productions include Tom in the New York premiere of Nightsweat by Robert Chesley, and Rupert in Booth Tarkington’s The Trysting Place at the St. Peter's Theater. He also appeared in Yoko Ono's video “Sky People” as the Leading Man.

As a cabaret performer, Geoff's solo shows include A Short Visit Only, based on the life and songs of Noel Coward, You're The Top, featuring the songs of Cole Porter, and Words Wit Music, his slice-of-life account of growing up Episcopalian and randy in small-town Connecticut. As a director, he has worked on many cabaret solo shows and workshops around New York City.

Stoner studied acting with Uta Hagen, Hal Holden, Wynn Handman, Phillip Gushee, and Ron Stetson. He also studied improvisation at The Pit.

LANFORD WILSON (Playwright) was a pioneer of the Off-Off-Broadway and regional theatre movements. His plays are known for experimental staging, simultaneous dialogue, and deferred character exposition. He won a 1980 Pulitzer Prize for Talley’s Folly (1979).

Wilson attended Missouri, San Diego, and Chicago schools before moving to New York City in 1962. From 1963 his plays were produced regularly at Off-Off-Broadway theatres such as Caffe Cino and La Mama Experimental Theatre Club. Home Free! and The Madness of Lady Bright (published together in 1968) are two one-act plays first performed in 1964; the former involves a pair of incestuous siblings, and the latter features an aging transvestite. Balm in Gilead (1965), Wilson’s first full-length play, is set in a crowded world of hustlers and junkies. The Rimers of Eldritch (1967) examines life in a small town.

In 1969, along with longtime associate Marshall W. Mason and others, he founded the Circle Theater (later Circle Repertory Company), a regional theatre in New York City. Wilson remained involved with Circle Repertory until 1996, when it closed. Wilson achieved commercial success with The Great Nebula in Orion (1971), The Hot l Baltimore (1973; adapted for television 1975), and The Mound Builders (1975). He also wrote a cycle of plays about the effects of war on a family from Missouri; these include The 5th of July (1978; televised 1982), Talley’s Folly, A Tale Told (1981), and Talley and Son (1985). His other plays include The Gingham Dog (1969); Lemon Sky (1970; televised 1987); Angels Fall (1982); Burn This (1987); Redwood Curtain (1993; televised 1995), about a young adopted woman’s search for information about the Vietnamese woman and American GI who are her real parents; Sympathetic Magic (1997); and Book of Days (1998). Some of Wilson’s plays are gathered in Four Short Plays (1994) and Collected Plays, 1965–1970 (1996).

DEEP FLIGHT PRODUCTIONS  is a live performance and film production company created by Margaret Curry. Born out of a desire to collaborate deeply and bravely, Deep Flight seeks to create stories that entertain, elicit, and evoke, that will give space and voice to the people who've either not been able to tell their story because they've been oppressed or overlooked or because no one has yet considered it "marketable" or "worthy" of what is "popular" entertainment. Stories that explore and ask questions about things that society tends to deem taboo, inconvenient, or "hard to look at," bring the elephants in the rooms out of the shadows and into the light so that understanding and potential movement can occur. Works that explore and celebrate the human spirit and love, reveal the stories of how people rise above life's problems and the human condition to make change and follow their hearts. Stories that reveal the beauty and the heroism in the seemingly ordinary moments and people in life.
