Acclaimed stage actor, producer, and social justice storyteller Michael Anthony Tatmon will headline the THURGOOD Equal Justice Tour, portraying the legendary Justice Thurgood Marshall. THURGOOD will play one-night-only as part of the United Solo Theatre Festival at Theatre Row (410 West 42nd Street). The performance will take place on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $65 and available at https://theatrerow.ludus.com/select.php?time_id=333498.
THURGOOD is the cornerstone of the newly established Thurgood Initiative, an educational and community engagement program that uses live theater to inspire dialogue about equal justice, civil rights, leadership, and the ongoing pursuit of democracy. This engagement launches the THURGOOD Equal Justice Tour and supports the nonpartisan THURGOOD Initiative through educational partnerships, civic engagement, and community conversations.
Step into history with Thurgood, George Stevens Jr.’s powerful one-man play that charts the extraordinary life of civil rights icon and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. From his early days as a young lawyer fighting segregation to his landmark Supreme Court victories, this gripping drama illuminates the courage, wit, and unwavering resolve of a man who reshaped the American legal landscape.
"Great theater has the power to transform hearts, expand minds, and unite communities," said Dr. Dimov. "Every production is an opportunity to discover our shared humanity."
"Justice is not simply a chapter in our history—it is a responsibility we inherit," said Tatmon. "Through the life of Thurgood Marshall, we invite audiences to remember where we've been, understand where we are, and imagine where we can go together.”
“Stirring and absorbing. THURGOOD may actually feel like a sweet escape to happier times, every bit as cheering (and a whole lot more edifying) than the giddiest of Broadway musicals. As I left, I found myself misty eyed.” —Charles Isherwood, The New York Times
“All bio dramas should be as vivid and entertaining as THURGOOD. A story rich in history, humanity and humor.” —Joe Dziemianowicz, New York Daily News
In this intimate New York festival engagement, Michael Anthony Tatmon commands the stage as Marshall, inviting audiences into justice’s memories, battles, and private reflections with warmth, humor, and disarming honesty. Through his dynamic performance, the past feels immediate and alive, revealing the human being behind the legend.
Michael Anthony Tatmon (Faust, Othello, Blind Tom, 7 Stages Theater) stars as Marshall.
The production features scenic design by Zhanna Gurvich and stage management by Jeremy Stein. Producer/solo-theatre consultant is Jessica Lynn Johnson. Publicity by Katie Rosin/Kampfire PR.

In Living Colored was born in 2018 when Michael Anthony Tatmon moved to Fort Collins and walked into The Bas Bleu Theatre to audition. He immediately befriended the company and planned to co-produce a play he had been passionate about for years: Thurgood. Zhanna Gurvich saw the play's value for school kids studying American history and introduced Michael to social studies teachers within PSD. They produced the play for several high school and middle school classes and made plans to produce more plays in schools and community centers throughout Colorado.
Then came the pandemic. Production paused, and priorities got rearranged. In 2022, the company eased back into production with a staged reading of an original new work by local playwright William Wright, Clarice and Michelangelo.
THE THURGOOD EQUAL JUSTICE TOUR extends beyond theatrical performance. Through The Thurgood Initiative, Tatmon and In Living Colored will partner with schools, universities, theaters, cultural organizations, and community institutions to present educational workshops, post-show discussions, leadership conversations, and civic engagement programming designed to inspire future generations.
