New York, NY - April 30, 2026 - Due to popular demand, NEW PLACE PLAYERS is pleased to announce a limited new run of the critically acclaimed TEMPEST TOSSED, adapted by Craig Bacon and directed by Janina Picard. TEMPEST TOSSED is a chamber adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, where the play's action is beautifully focused with an original live score by music director Flavio Gaete, as well as a magical Butoh-inspired movement led by Yoshiko Usemi. The performance creates an immersive island, where Caliban’s mother, the powerful witch Sycorax, finally has a voice, offering a fresh perspective on this story of justice, restoration, freedom, and forgiveness.

The cast of seven performers includes Anna Bikales as Sycorax, Jacquie Bonnet (Off-Broadway’s The Glitch) and Rose Kanj (Off-Broadway’s One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest) as Ariel, Blake Brundy (Off-Broadway’s Singfeld: The Parody Musical about Nothing!, and Apocalypse Truck: The Musical) as Caliban/Ferdinand, Craig Bacon (Merry Wives of Windsor, Much Ado About Nothing, Henry IV pt. 1 – Shakespeare & Co.) as Prospero, Flavio Gaete (performed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center) as Juno, and Clara Tristan (Off-Broadway’s Two Girls) as Miranda.

BIOGRAPHIES
CRAIG BACON (Artistic Director) is a director, actor, and voice teacher designated by Kristin Linklater. He has taught at the Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University and other faculty appointments include SUNY Purchase, Columbia University, Fordham University, NYU (Atlantic Theater Company), National Theater Institute (US and UK), The Actors Centre (London), The Linklater Center, and Shakespeare & Co. Some of Craig’s directing work includes The Mercury Theatre in England (Macbeth, The Tempest, The Crucible); SUNY Purchase (The Winter’s Tale, By the Bog of Cats, and LAByrinth Theater Company’s One-Acts co-directed with Richard Crawford).
JANINA PICARD (Director) is a German-born actor, director, and teacher of dreamwork for artists based in NYC. With over a decade of professional experience working as a stage and film actor in both Europe and the United States, her directorial vision is deeply influenced by working with the unconscious. She assisted, trained, and studied extensively with her mentor Sandra Seacat in Los Angeles and has furthered her studies of dreamwork with the C.G. Jung Institute Berlin and the C.G. Jung Centre Dublin. She has been coaching artists privately and teaching workshops internationally since 2020.
FLAVIO GAETE (Music Director) has worked as a musician, sound designer, actor, arts administrator, and teacher. He has collaborated with a wide variety of ensembles in music, theater, film, and dance. Some of his latest collaborations have been with New Place Players as music director for The Masque of Night & Othello, film composer Renaud Barbier for his latest film soundtrack, Petit Pays, and the Orquesta de Cámara de Chile. Flavio has been a guest lecturer at Sciences Po Paris-Reims and \u200b NY University and has taught extensively throughout NYC. He has also played with various orchestras and ensembles, including the Orquesta de Cámara de Chile, Distinguished Concerts International NY, The Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas, the Manhattan Camerata, Grammy nominee Nikolett Pankovits, and various others, having performed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, among others.
YOSHIKO USAMI (Movement Director) is an actor, Butoh artist, theater maker, choreographer, and movement instructor from Japan, with various awards, including “Best One-Woman Show,” “Best Choreography,” “Best Physical Theatre,” and “Best Actress” for Butoh Medea, in festivals such as United Solo NYC at Theatre Row and the Hollywood Fringe. Butoh Medea appeared in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, winning a nomination for the “Asian Arts Awards.” It has toured the US and Europe (Poland, UK, Italy, Turkey, Germany and Czech Republic).
NEW PLACE PLAYERS brings the power of Shakespeare’s plays into intimate, found spaces, accompanied by original live chamber music. The company unites seasoned musicians and actors with emerging MFA graduates, creating a collaborative environment that actively supports a new generation of theater artists. Now in partnership with Casa Duse—a historic parlor townhouse described as a “museum of opera and theater luminaries,” lined with portraits of Eleonora Duse and autographed photographs of artists such as Laurence Olivier, Luciano Pavarotti, and Arturo Toscanini—New Place Players expands its mission to present chamber Shakespeare while also highlighting and integrating local artistic voices.
