THE YORK THEATRE ANNOUNCES 2026–2027 SEASON
World Premiere Musicals, a new partnership with TheaterWorksUSA and So Much More… including the return of the New2NY Series
New York, NY (Tuesday, April 28, 2026) – The York Theatre (Joseph Hayward, Producing Artistic Director, Wendy Hall, General Manager) proudly unveils its 2026–2027 season, which includes two new musicals TRULY, HOWARD HUGHES and KILGALLEN, plus the return of the New2NY Series, reaffirming The York’s mission to develop, produce, and celebrate new musical theatre. The York is also pleased to announce a partnership with TheaterWorksUSA that brings their work to The York’s current home The Theater at St. Jean’s (entrance on 150 East 76th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue.) ”Building on the momentum of last season, we are proud to present eight musicals in the year ahead, including an exciting collaboration with TheaterWorksUSA,” said Joseph Hayward, Producing Artistic Director.
“The York has a long and proud legacy of launching new musical works. At this very moment, our production of Gotta Dance, presented in association with Riki Kane Larimer, is enjoying a commercial run at Stage 42, with more exciting news to come in the weeks ahead. As always, we remain committed to developing exceptional new work, bringing the finest talent to the Upper East Side, and above all, keeping our theatre accessible and affordable.”
Barbara Pasternack, Producing Artistic Director of TheaterWorksUSA, added “We are thrilled to be partnering with The York Theatre at St. Jean’s. It has been some time since we’ve had a New York season or home theatre—our previous one being at the Lucille Lortel Theatre—and it feels especially meaningful to return in this way. TheaterWorksUSA and The York Theatre are aligned in mission, committed to developing new musicals and supporting new artists, and we look forward to growing this partnership and building multigenerational audiences of musical theater lovers together.”

Truly, Howard Hughes is an unconventional love story following one of the 20th century's most fascinating figures: aviator, filmmaker, businessman, and recluse, Howard Robard Hughes, Jr.. The story unfolds as Hughes revisits his extraordinary life during his final moments, confronting the one thing his power and fortune could never secure, and leaves us with a haunting question: ...Wouldn't you, if you could?
KILGALLEN
World Premiere Musical
November 28 - December 27
Book & Music by Chuck Strand
Lyrics by Chuck Strand and Emily Drossell
Additional Music by George Petersen
KILGALLEN is a true crime musical about Dorothy Kilgallen, the most powerful female journalist of the 1950s. Brilliant, relentless, and unapologetically ambitious, Kilgallen moved among the celebrities, politicians, and power brokers who defined her era. When President Kennedy was assassinated, she became convinced that the truth was being buried, and set out to prove it. Even as she realized her life was in danger, she forged ahead. Dorothy died under suspicious circumstances on November 7, 1965. The mystery remains unsolved today.
NEW2NY Series
3 Exciting Titles to be Announced
March 6 - April 11, 2027
The New2NY Series is where new musicals take their first steps in New York.
For nearly two decades, New2NY has served as a vital launching pad for new work. Be among the first to experience new musicals and help to shape what comes next. These lovingly and minimally staged concert presentations strip away the spectacle and focus on what matters: the writing, the music, and the storytelling.
The series has a strong track record of successful transfers, including In Transit prior to its Broadway run, and most recently Monte Cristo and Truly, Howard Hughes, which went on to The York’s Mainstage Series.
A SPECIAL PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE YORK THEATRE AND TheaterWorksUSA takes young audiences on three unforgettable adventures: first, Ms. Frizzle blasts her class into outer space for an epic interplanetary field trip in THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS: LOST IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM (Music & Lyrics by Matthew Lee Robinson, Book by Marshall Pailet - January 16, 2027); then whimsical puppets and live performers dive into a sweeping oceanic quest in THE POUT-POUT FISH (Book by Christopher Anselmo, Jared Corak, Matt Acheson, & Fergus J. Walsh; Music & Lyrics by Christopher Anselmo & Jared Corak - May 2, 2027); and finally, a tech-free farm erupts into delightful chaos when typing cows and striking chickens demand blankets from a stubborn Farmer Brown in CLICK, CLACK, MOO (Book by Billy Aronson, Lyrics by Kevin Del Aguila, Music by Brad Alexander - May 23, 2027).
Theaterworks tickets will be available through the York box office.

THE YORK THEATRE, “Where Musicals Come to Life,” is the only theatre in New York City—and one of very few in the world—dedicated to developing and fully producing new musicals and preserving notable shows from the past. For over five decades, York’s intimate, imaginative style of producing both original and classic musicals has resulted in critical acclaim and recognition from artists and audiences alike. Since 1997, The York has focused on new musicals in its Mainstage Series—most of them world, American, or New York premieres—by some of the field’s most esteemed creators and has also helped launch the careers of many talented new writers. Over 47 cast recordings from York Theatre productions are now available, including its acclaimed revival of CLOSER THAN EVER (2013 Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best Revival). Commercial transfers of such York premieres as THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS (THE MUSICAL!), SOUVENIR (Tony Award Nomination for actress Judy Kaye), and JOLSON & COMPANY, and revivals of PACIFIC OVERTURES and SWEENEY TODD (four Tony Nominations including Best Revival) have all showcased the importance of The York and its programs.
The York is the recipient of an Emmy Nomination, a special Drama Desk Award for “Developing and Producing New Musicals,” and a special Outer Critics Circle Award for “50 Years of Producing New and Classic Musicals.” Most recently, Stephanie Jae Park received a Lortel Nomination for her performance in The York’s Monte Cristo. The York is currently producing at The Theatre at St. Jean’s at 76th Street and Lexington Avenue.
