New York, NY (March 10, 2026) – The York Theatre (Joseph Hayward, Producing Artistic Director, Wendy Hall, General Manager), in association with Jim Kierstead, will present a special by-invitation-only reading of Jason Schafer and Arthur Lafrentz Bacon’s new musical TRICK! THE MUSICAL, directed by Jeff Calhoun (Newsies). TRICK! THE MUSICAL will play a two-show limited engagement at Pearl Studios (500 8th Ave). Performances are March 12 at 3 p.m. and March 13 at 1 p.m. Tickets are by invitation only; RSVP to boxoffice@yorktheatre.org.
Based on the screenplay of the beloved queer rom-com, TRICK! THE MUSICAL follows two young men trying to hook up over one unforgettable night in New York City. A hopelessly romantic aspiring Broadway songwriter picks up a hunky go-go boy at a gay bar, and they return to the songwriter’s one-room apartment only to find his robustly hetero roommate has dibs on their place. As the newly acquainted pair searches for somewhere to get together, they endure a series of misadventures involving a downtown piano bar, a surprise sex-therapy session, a spotlight-chasing struggling actress, and an extremely jaded drag queen. By dawn, they realize they’ve stumbled into a connection neither expected.
“In a world often dominated by cynicism, it’s heartening and refreshing to celebrate a show where innocence triumphs!” - Jeff Calhoun
The production stars Klea Blackhurst (award-winning tribute to Ethel Merman, Everything The Traffic Will Allow) as Terri, Tony and Grammy Award-winner J. Harrison Ghee (Some Like It Hot) as Drag Superstar, Aline Mayagoitia (Nat’l Tour SIX) as Kathryn, Mason Reeves (Jeanine Tesori's Blue) as Mark, Ethan Roger (Nat’l Tour Back to the Future) as Rich, J Savage (Damn Yankees, Arena Stage) as Ben the ASM, Emmet Smith (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), as Gabriel, and Hailey Thomas (Little Shop of Horrors), as Judy.

The York Theatre, “Where Musicals Come to Life,” is the only theatre in New York City—and one of very few in the world—dedicated to developing and fully producing new musicals and preserving notable shows from the past. For over five decades, York’s intimate, imaginative approach to producing both original and classic musicals has earned critical acclaim and recognition from artists and audiences alike. Since 1997, The York has focused on new musicals in its Mainstage Series—most of them world, American, or New York premieres—by some of the field’s most esteemed creators and has also helped launch the careers of many talented new writers. Over 45 cast recordings from York Theatre productions are now available, including its acclaimed revival of Closer Than Ever (2013 Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best Revival). Commercial transfers of such York premieres as The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!), Souvenir (Tony Award Nomination for actress Judy Kaye), and Jolson & Company, and revivals of Pacific Overtures and Sweeney Todd (four Tony Nominations including Best Revival) have all showcased the importance of The York and its programs.
The York is the recipient of an Emmy Nomination, a special Drama Desk Award for “Developing and Producing New Musicals,” and a special Outer Critics Circle Award for “50 Years of Producing New and Classic Musicals.” The York is currently producing at The Theatre at St. Jean’s at 76th Street and Lexington Avenue.
