ANDY JONES, TODD DONOVAN, AND REED LUPLAU PRESENT AN INVITATION-ONLY READING OF THE NEW DANCE MUSICAL WITH MUSIC AND LYRICS BY RECORDING ARTIST LP
WHEN WE TOUCH
A Mother's battle between State and Son
A workshop presentation for the developing Reed Luplau (Moulin Rouge, Al Hirschfeld Theatre) and Jacob Yates dance narrative, When We Touch, is planned for Thursday, November 16 at 1PM and 4PM at Open Jar Studios (1601 Broadway, Studio 11A, New York, NY, 10019). When We Touch is a Historical drama told through the magic of music and dance. With music and lyrics by the incredible queer artist 'LP', and the backdrop being East Berlin, 1989, the show celebrates the fight for freedom and the endurance of humanity. Interested parties can RSVP to [email protected].
Opposing the communist German Democratic Republic, the city and its people have erupted in one of the biggest protests in East German history. Exactly one week before the fall of the Berlin Wall, When We Touch follows a queer son named Elias, whose mother, Eleanor, a dedicated Stasi Agent, does all she can to defend her country. Elias knows no other life besides the strict rules of the state. Born into the cold conflict and after multiple run-ins with the communist law, Elias's desire for liberation is growing rapidly. As freedom flirts behind a thirteen-foot wall, Elias is ready to take action. Along with his lover, Jasper, and their close circle of eccentric friends, they conceive a plan of escape. Unbeknownst to Elias, his mother is always listening.
According to LP, “When Reed and Andy first came to me and said they wanted to do a musical of my music, I was so moved, blown away, and touched. They said they wanted to call it When We Touch, and I just couldn’t kind of grasp it, I still can’t–my music going past me, to other people singing it and singing it beautifully. It’s a cohesive singular message, and this narrative is also about breaking down walls. I can’t wait for you to see it, and I can’t wait to see it.”
The reading will be performed by Jacqueline B. Arnold (Moulin Rouge, Al Hirschfeld Theatre), Hannah Corneau (Promises, Promises, Merkin Concert Hall), Gaby Diaz (Only Gold, MCC Theatre), Karli Dinardo (Bob Fosse’s Dancin’, Music Box Theatre), Daniel Gaymon (Hamilton, US “Angelica” Tour), Stephen Hernandez (Moulin Rouge, Al Hirschfeld Theatre) ), Bahiyah Hibah (Moulin Rouge, Al Hirschfeld Theatre), Melissa Rose Hirsch (Blueprint Specials), Gabriel Hyman (Bob Fosse’s Dancin’, Music Box Theatre), Kody Jauron (Wicked, US Tour), Kolton Krouse (Bob Fosse’s Dancin’, Music Box Theatre), Andre Malcolm (Hamilton, US “Angelica” Tour), Olivia Puckett (The Panic of ‘29), Bobby Conte Thornton (Company, Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre), and Jena VanElslander (Jagged Little Pill, US Tour).
